PRINCE2 projektledelse

Curative Health Care

The World Health Organization estimates that globally more than 5% of all new HIV infections are caused by unsafe injections with approximately 250.000 people infected annually. Unsafe injections are the most common cause of Hepatitis C virus infection in developing and transitional countries, causing two million new infections each year and accounting for 40% of cases. Also, 30% of cases of Hepatitis B virus results from unsafe injections.

The spread of blood borne pathogens such as HIV, Hepatitis B & C among patients and health care workers in hospitals and health care facilities can be halted. The Emunio retractable safety syringe protects the patients, the health care workers and the environment. It is efficient and affordable protection against needle stick injuries.

According to research published in the International Journal of STDs and AIDS, US researchers reviewed hundreds of studies on HIV transmission across Africa – going back 20 years – concluding that the main cause was the use of dirty needles for medical injections. In the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, researchers in Germany stated that unsafe sex no longer was the main cause to HIV in Africa and blamed contaminated needles and exposure in health care settings.

Unsafe injections are an underplayed risk that urgently needs to be highlighted and accepted as being real. At a time where an estimated 19-53% of government health employees’ death in African countries are caused by AIDS, the need for safety syringes with needle retraction feature becomes more and more obvious.

Immunization

In some developing countries, it is common (but very undesirable) practice to change the needle and reuse syringes. Such practice results in influx of fluids from a possibly contaminated needle back into the syringe and then into the next patient, which obviously leads to transmission of diseases. The Auto Disable (AD) syringe eliminates the risk of infection, as it can only be used once.

The Emunio AD syringe is suitable for mass immunization campaigns and for use in clinics and other health care settings.

  • Meets WHO requirements
  • Inexpensive
  • Suitable for use in syringe melters or for incineration
  • No specific training required (works like a normal syringe, no ventilation or pumping needed)

The syringe shall not be recapped and shall be disposed of in sharps dispenser!
